Tony Dungy Speaks Regarding Plaxico and the Eagles

Tony Dungy played a big role in the comeback of Michael Vick, and was also a big reason Andy Reid trusted Vick enough to give him a chance. Vick has spoken at length about how important Dungy has been to him.

Tony Dungy was with Plaxico today for an event in New York.

So it’s only natural for Dungy to be questioned about the future of Plaxico Burress, as he was today by Mike Garafalo of the New Jersey star Ledger, and if that future is at the Linc.

“I don’t know that would be the case. He wants to be some place where he’s wanted, where he’s comfortable,” Dungy said. “I don’t think playing football is the most important thing for him now. He wants to play very badly and feels like he had two years to rest his body up, so he’ll be able to play. But just like with Mike, I think it becomes important but not the most important thing.”

Dungy noting he wants to be somewhere he’s wanted, when asked specifically about Philadelphia, could be a hint that initial reports that the Eagles were not interested are true.

The Super Bowl winning coach said that he has had discussions with Plax about what can do still do on the field.

“Plax told me, ‘I can be better. … I was banged up my last year. I was not healthy. So I haven’t been able to run and work the way I would, but I’m healed up so I can be better,’” Dungy said. “After what happened with Mike, I can’t doubt it.”

But while Dungy wants to believe in Burress, he noted that as a former coach, he can’t help but he skeptical.

“There’s something that, as a coach, tells me I don’t believe that, but I’ll have to let it play out and see.”

Whether it plays out in Philadelphia though, as remains to be seen.

Plax finally speaks, jokes prison improved his game

Plaxico Burress has done more talking with his hat selection then he has with his mouth since being released from prison, so when he has chosen to speak, it seems to be breaking news.

Plaxico has returned to Florida and laid low since sending Philly into a frenzy with his hat

Aditi Kinkhabwala of the Wall St Journal recently spoke to Plax, and offered some insight on what he’s been up to since he returned to his Florida home. As for prospective teams wondering how his game will be after 20 months in prison, Plax said he could be even better.

“There weren’t a lot of guys throwing perfect spirals in there” joked Plax. “I had to work to catch those balls.”

When the conversation turned serious, Plax offered some insight on what it was like during his time in jail.

“There is nothing pleasant about prison,” said Burress. “There’s so much I can tell you and (at the same time) nothing I can put my finger on. There’s an emotional toll and there were definitely some guys I was around who’d done things that made me say, ‘Really, seriously, I am here?”

While he does not come across extremely apologetic about what he did in that statement, it does put in perspective what Plax did and that any team thinking of singing him is not bringing in a hard core criminal.

As for his future, Plax did not rule out returning to the New York Giants, and did admit to speaking to Michael Vick. Acknowledging he has spoken to Vick puts to rest some of the rumors that he was not allowed to speak to Vick, as they are both ex-convicts.

Plax said that he plans on returning to New Jersey, where he lives, next week. Interestingly enough, that is where the Eagles have been holding their workouts. With Vick back in town, it will be interesting to see if the two hook up and work out.

Once the lock out ends, Plax is confident he is ready to roll.

“Just give me a playbook, and I’ll learn it”

Reid won’t tip his hat on Plaxico

With the players still locked out, the Philadelphia Eagles coaches and staff were left to complete the teams annual playground build by themselves, this year going to work at the Moffett School.

Between painting and hammering, Reid took time to answer questions from the media. But just like his weekly press conference during the season, the head coach had little to say- especially when it came to Plaxico Burress.

“We haven’t even gone there” said Reid to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Reid also noted that there was “nothing (we) can do there” due to the lock out.

Knowing Reid and his passion for making plans far in advance, its hard to imagine the Eagles have not already made up their mind regarding their interest in Plaxico.  The Eagles saw first hand that it took a year for Michael Vick to get his legs back, so its hard to imagine a work out swaying them either way.

Regardless of whether or not he and Joe Banner are interested, it is certainly no surprise that he offered little in terms of a comment on the situation.
