Vick on Rob Ryan: He’s gonna have to deal with us

A few days ago, Rob Ryan took a shot at the Philadelphia Eagles, saying that they were the “all-hype team” and that the Cowboys were going to “kiss their a**”

Those words did not go over well with Michael Vick.

Speaking to 97.5 The Fanatic, Vick shot back at Ryan.

“I was mad about that,” Vick said with a cool confidence. “Sometimes my emotions do come into play and I felt like that was inappropriate. But he’s gonna have to deal with us. And he’s going to have to find solutions just like everybody else. And we don’t talk. We go about our business the right way.”

Vick is absolutely right in what he said, and would make head coach Andy Reid proud in the way he said it. The Cowboys and their defensive coordinator can talk all they want, but the fact is that their defense got burned by the Eagles last season in Dallas. It’s understandable that Ryan would want to fire his team up and show confidence in his players, but he might have awoken the wrong giant in Vick and the Eagles offense.

“Maybe we’ll make him eat his words” finished Vick. “I hope he backs it up.”

What’s going on with Maclin?

Every morning since he arrived at camp, Jeremy Maclin takes the field with his team at 8am to stretch with the rest of the injured players.

While Maclin is not injured, he has been sidelined with what can only be called a mystery illness. The Eagles have refused to speculate on why the star receiver is out, leaving the fans and media to only speculate on what it could be.

Maclin prepares for another day of watching

Noticeably thinner then last season, Maclin seems in good spirits as he paces the sidelines, joking with teammates and talking to coaches. He has refused to talk to any members of the media until he begins to practice. When that will be however, is anyones guess.

What is wrong with Maclin? The Eagles refusal to answer that question leads to speculation. During the offseason we were forced to play lawyers with the lockout, and now we are forced to play doctors with Maclin.

So here is some good old fashion speculation, based off of what we know and have seen at camp.

Many people have assumed that his absence is related to mono, which he had last year and caused him to loose 20 pounds.

But if Maclin has mono, why is he with his team? Even if he has recovered, and is deemed not contagious by doctors, why would the Eagles risk it? If it is mono, it must be a bad virus as he now has had it twice in less then a year, only giving the Eagles further reason to keep him away. Also, if it is mono, why would the Eagles not just come out and say it?

The fact the Eagles won’t talk, and Maclin is allowed to interact with his teammates has to make one think that something bigger may be going on. In addition, if the Eagles are still waiting for test results, this is the longest I’ve ever seen a mono test take.

By bringing Maclin back before he was ready, the team has only created more speculation about why he is out. Is something bigger going on with Maclin?

It sure seems that way, and the Eagles are doing nothing to dispel it.

Brent Celek Disappointing So Far

The Eagles have been missing key offensive pieces during training camp so far, with Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson both not having practiced yet.

While Brent Celek has been there, you wouldn’t know it unless you spent some good hard time trying to find him.

Brent Celek in a familiar place this camp- the sideline

Celek has been MIA in the Eagles drills so far this camp, as all the back up tight ends- Clay Harbor, Donald Lee and Clay Ingraham- have out played him.  He looks noticeably slower after adding some muscle this offseason during his workouts at PowerTrain in New Jersey.

Celek talked about it now slowing him down and how he is in the best shape of his life, but you wouldn’t know it from watching him at Lehigh. He has had trouble hanging on to the ball, which was something that plagued him last season. With an injury to his hand, most of the drops were excused, but as he continues to drop them during camp, you have to wonder when they will stop.

One reason Celek could have bulked up is all of the blocking he did last season. He was asked to stay on the line quite a bit to help out, which hurt his numbers. It’s understandable that after taking a beating last season in his new role week after week Celek would want to bulk up, but watching him struggle through camp, you have to wonder if he put on to much.

Luckily, Celek has plenty of time to adjust and improve before the first game. It is important he does, as he can be a safety net to Michael Vick on the underneath routes if he can start hanging on to the ball again.

But so far, Celek is not having a good camp.

Eagles Will Move Nnamdi All Around

Today was the day that Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, Ronnie Brown and others have been waiting for- the day they can finally put on the pads and practice.

For media and the fans, it was also the day that the Eagles would be forced to tip their hand on what they planned to do with their trio of all star corners.

Asomugha will be all over this year for the Eagles

After warming up, the Eagles defense took the field for install. Asante Samuel lined up at his usual right cornerback position, with Nnamdi lined up on the left. It is very clear from watching the Eagles today that when they play two cornerbacks, it is Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who is going to be the odd man out.

When the team went into dime and nickel packages, Nnamdi moved inside as Rodgers-Cromartie lined up on the left. Nnamdi lined up next to Trent Cole on the left side, showing blitz every time he was their. On some plays, he ran in and on others, he dropped back into coverage. Juan Castillo moved Nnamdi inside on a number of plays, as it was clear he has all kinds of ideas of his new defensive toy. Making things even better for Castillo is Nnamdi’s willingness to experiment, as he even lined up in the backfield for some plays.

Opposing offensive coordinators are going to be staying up at night worried about where Nnamdi will be. The Eagles wealth of cornerbacks allow them to take the best one in the game and move him all around. Nnamdi’s size makes him an ideal fit to line up and show blitz, and he will be able to get in quick and get his long arms up in the air. When he has to drop back, he has the size to cover tight ends.

Although Rodgers-Cromartie did not line up as a starter, he was on the field a ton. The former Arizona Cardinal might just be the best athlete on the team, as he did not get beat down the field once during the morning practice. His speed and size, in addition to his long arms, allow him to make the play even if he is a step behind.

While Nnamdi and Rodgers-Cromartie moved all around, Asante Samuel was on the right side the entire practice. It makes sense to keep Samuel their, as he has shown is he a turnover machine from that side. In addition, he really can’t move inside as the other two can, as he lacks the size to play their.

Overall, the Eagles showed one thing this morning: that if they get a lead on a team, it is going to be near impossible for opposing teams to throw on this defense and catch up.
