CBS Sports: CBA 80-85 Percent Done

It appears that once he ball started to roll in the right direction in the NFL CBA negotiations, it kept going, going and going.

And now, according to a source of CBSSports.com, it has rolled all the way to a  CBA being 85 percent of the way done.

Check out this passage from CBSSports.com writer Mike Freeman, another reporter who has been on top of the negotiations from day one, regarding the mood inside the negotiation meetings.

“Inside the super duper not-so-secret meetings, jokes are exchanged, when threats were before. Handshakes are commonplace. So are smiles and chit chat: How’s the wife? How’s the kids? Good to hear. Tell them I said, Hi.”

What has the new, positive mood created?

“One source with intimate knowledge of the discussions tells me negotiations are 80-85 percent complete. They’ve made such fast progress, I’m told, it’s catching many of the principals by surprise. Some are now canceling vacations, believing an agreement will be reached within a matter of days.”

It seems every day now the NFL and players make leaps and bounds- first it was a report of six weeks, then 2-3 weeks, and now days. Don’t be surprised to see reports creeping up in the next few days that a deal is done.

Regardless of when it is done, it appears now that there is no question it will be done- and done soon. It looks like no games will be missed, let alone training camp.

Lets hope the ball keeps rolling in the right direction, so we can soon start talking football.

Pro Football Weekly Ranks Andy Reid 4th Best Coach

Pro Football Weekly released their list of the the top ten coaches in the NFL as chosen by their staff, and Philadelphia’s own Andy Reid finished very high.

Coming in as the 4th best coach in the league, Reid ranks only behind Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin and Mike McCarthy. Clearly the main factor in ranking those three above Big Red is one thing: a Super Bowl victory.

Placing Andy Reid on the list of top coaches has been hard for Eagles fans

While I would not argue with Tomlin or Belichick above Reid, I would have to disagree with McCarthy. Yes, McCarthy won a Super Bowl, beating Reid’s Eagles along the way. But McCarthy has a winning percentage as a coach of .600, and had only 1 playoff win in his 4 seasons as head coach before 2011. You could also argue that McCarthy was taken along for the ride by a hot Aaron Rodgers, and his Packers have been beaten early in the playoffs in years they were supposed to go far.

Reid, on the other hand, has a winning percentage of .618  in 12 years on the job. He has 3 seasons of .500 or worse in 12 years- McCarthy already has 2 in 5 years. While Reid has not been able to capture the big one, he has been a solid playoff coach, being knocked out in the first round only twice in his 12 years.

When picking Reid over McCarthy, it is important to look at longevity and track record. McCarthy before the Super Bowl was off to an average start as a head coach, while Reid has been the model for consistency over his time with the Eagles. For all of his downfalls as a coach, he still has steered one of the most successful  franchises over the last decade in the NFL, and that should count for something.

Who do you think is the better coach- Andy Reid or Mike McCarthy?

NFL Lockout Over in 2-3 Weeks?

Yesterday, NFL experts around the league started to put a timetable on when a deal could be struck. Most guessed by mid-July, meaning that fans were in for another 5-6 weeks of NFL labor talk.

But reports are coming out today that a deal would be coming much sooner- like 2-3 weeks sooner.

Can a deal get done in time for the Eagles to go to Lehigh?

Daniel Kaplan of the SporsBusiness Journal, who has been doing an excellent job throughout this whole process staying on top of everything, boldly predicted that the framework for a deal could be in place as soon as two weeks from now.  Many people across the league expect that a new deal could be voted on during the court hearing on June 21, and then the final details would be hammered out in the following days.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post also cites sources from both sides stating that a deal could be done in 2-3 weeks, if not sooner. Both sides have been told to be prepared to stay over on June 21, which is a sign that both sides plan on getting a deal done.

Adam Schefter of ESPN added to the news that the lawyers will be at the meetings in Chicago next week. This is a good sign because it shows both sides feel they are close enough to a resolution that the fine print will need to be figured out.

If a deal if done by then, it will be interesting to see if the Eagles are still able to migrate to Lehigh University for training camp. There were reports that Lehigh wanted to know by mid-June, as that would give them a month to set up shop. With the Eagles usually starting around July 20th, it looks unlikely that they will be able to have the fields ready. However, I find it hard to believe that with the amount of money that Lehigh brings in from hosting the birds, that something will not be able to get done.

As with any tense negotiations, off of this optimism could go away quickly, but for now, it looks like the end is finally near.
